Oil company healthcare initiatives in Africa and South Am
Overview
Energy companies are funding healthcare infrastructure improvements in regions where they operate. In Senegal, the Saint-Louis Regional Hospital Center inaugurated a modernized maternity ward, a project funded and technically supported by bp and partners from the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim gas project. The renovation aimed to provide elite-standard healthcare through advanced equipment and updated neonatal medicine protocols.
In Suriname, the GranMorgu Mother & Child Healthcare Project, sponsored by TotalEnergies EP Suriname B.V. and APA Suriname Corporation, has moved into the construction and renovation phase at the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP). This USD 13 million initiative aims to modernize maternal and pediatric care through several key components: the expansion of the Academic Pediatric Center Suriname (APCS), the modernization of the OBGYN Mother & Child Center, and investments in medical equipment.
Specific upgrades include a specialized pediatric emergency department and the modernization of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). To maintain patient safety during the phased works scheduled between 2026 and 2028, the NICU and PICU will be temporarily relocated to the Military Hospital. Additionally, a Pediatric Outreach Program will be implemented to serve remote communities such as Apoera and Moengo. President Jennifer Simons has emphasized that the benefits of the oil and gas sector should be felt by the population through improved social services.
