Okta identity management for agentic AI

Overview

Okta is developing security and governance frameworks to manage the transition of agentic AI from experimentation to operational use. As AI agents function as digital identities within information systems, the company is introducing ‘Okta for AI Agents’ to secure connections between agents and corporate tools. This strategy includes the acquisition of Permiso Security to expand identity security through behavioral analysis and risk signals.

At the Oktane ‘26 investor summit, CEO Todd McKinnon highlighted the company’s role as a neutral layer for managing connections across heterogeneous systems. To support this, Okta announced Agent SSO, which aims to establish a first-class identity model for AI agents at the point of connection. McKinnon emphasized that while other platforms are active in the space, Okta’s focus remains on governing the access agents require to diverse enterprise systems.

Expanding on these capabilities at the 2026 Cybersecurity Assises in Monaco, Okta executives discussed the integration of non-human identities into broader security strategies. Xavier Mathis, Okta’s Regional Vice President and Country Manager for France, noted the company’s participation in the BluePrint Alliance—alongside partners such as AWS, ServiceNow, and Salesforce—to address security challenges posed by interconnected systems and the rise of AI agents. This movement toward securing AI agents coincides with broader enterprise shifts toward passwordless authentication and unified identity repositories, as seen in ENGIE’s long-term transition to utilize Okta as a primary identity source.
