Olivia Wilde career developments

Overview

Olivia Wilde has entered a period of high activity as both an actress and director. Her directorial project ‘The Invite’, an American remake of the Spanish film ‘Sentimental’ starring Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, Edward Norton, and Wilde herself, was acquired by A24 following a bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival.

In addition to her directorial work, Wilde has expanded her acting roles. She starred in Gregg Araki’s ‘I Want Your Sex’, which premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, and appeared in a supporting role in Tony Gilroy’s ‘Behemoth!’, a selection at the 2026 New York Film Festival. Critics have noted a thematic focus in her directorial work on characters attempting to break free from societal or patriarchal confinements.

‘The Invite’ is scheduled for release in Spanish cinemas on October 16. The film, featuring a screenplay by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, follows a couple, Joe and Angela, whose marriage is in a delicate state. A dinner with their neighbors, played by Cruz and Norton, serves as a turning point that explores the complexities of intimacy, middle-age frustrations, and modern obsessions with “relationship optimization.”

Following its theatrical window, ‘The Invite’ has been released on HBO Max. Described as a dialogue-driven “psychocomedy,” the film explores themes of sex and middle-aged neurosis. Following the mixed reception of her previous work, Wilde’s direction and performance in this project have garnered significant critical praise, with some observers noting her potential for Academy Award recognition in both acting and directing categories.
