Oncology infrastructure expansion in Mexico and Panama
Overview
Oncology services are undergoing expansion through new technology and facility upgrades in Mexico and Panama.
In Mexico, the State Cancerology Center (CECAN) in Chihuahua is installing a new linear accelerator to double radiotherapy capacity. In Michoacán, Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla announced plans to expand the State Oncology Care Center (CEAO) from 14 to 60 beds, utilizing former Hospital Civil facilities in coordination with IMSS Bienestar. Health officials reported that these strategies have contributed to improved survival rates for children with leukemia and tumors, while reducing treatment abandonment rates.
In Panama, President José Raúl Mulino inaugurated the José Mulino Rovira Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Center in Bugaba. This facility includes a radiotherapy unit with two bunkers for linear accelerators and brachytherapy, intended to decentralize specialized care for residents in western regions such as Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro.
