Ondo State environmental and infrastructure reforms
Overview
The administration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Ondo State has initiated several measures to improve sanitation and public infrastructure. During a monthly sanitation exercise, environmental health officers arrested at least 30 residents for violating hygiene and waste disposal regulations. These individuals face prosecution in the state’s Special Environmental Court as part of the governor’s ‘OUR EASE’ agenda.
To further address environmental and utility needs, the state has expanded its waste management capacity by increasing the number of private operators from 19 to 51 and deploying new equipment, including waste skips and compactor trucks. The government has also revived monthly sanitation exercises and established school environment clubs to promote recycling and conservation.
In addition to sanitation, the state is working to resolve water scarcity. This includes rehabilitating the Owena Multipurpose Dam Water Treatment Plant and expanding Akure’s water infrastructure through the procurement of equipment and pipes from China. Planned projects include the construction of a new transmission pipeline and a reservoir at Oke Aro, alongside the rehabilitation of existing township reservoirs.
