Online impersonation scams in Vietnam

Overview

Police in various Vietnamese localities have issued warnings regarding different types of online impersonation scams.

In early August, authorities in regions including Hải Phòng and Gia Lai warned citizens about fraudsters impersonating land-office officials. These scammers use platforms such as Zalo, Facebook, and SMS to solicit sensitive personal data, including identity cards, land-use certificates, and OTP codes, by directing victims to fake government or banking links.

By late August, Dak Lak Provincial Police reported a separate trend involving the impersonation of famous brands and reputable businesses on Facebook. In these schemes, scammers use fake fanpages and promotional offers, such as “customer appreciation” or “free gifts,” to lure users into completing tasks. After building trust through small initial transactions, the fraudsters demand larger transfers for purposes like “account verification” or “tax payments” before blocking the victims.
