Oregon fisherman rescue via voice assistant

Overview

Joseph Little, a 28-year-old fisherman, was rescued after being trapped beneath a large boulder near Astoria, Oregon. The accident occurred when rocks shifted near a pier, pinning Little by his torso and legs below the high-tide line.

Unable to reach his mobile phone, Little used the voice assistant Siri through his Bluetooth earbuds to call 911. The emergency call was routed through the Department of Homeland Security to the U.S. Coast Guard. Rescuers used drones to locate him approximately 120 meters from the coast.

Because the rock was too heavy to lift, emergency responders removed the surrounding rocks to free him. The U.S. Coast Guard performed a helicopter extraction to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria. Little sustained severe facial injuries, including multiple fractures, and underwent eight hours of reconstructive surgery. He is reported to be in stable condition, and his family has launched a fundraising campaign to assist with his medical recovery.
