Orinoco crocodile conservation efforts
Overview
Efforts to conserve the critically endangered Orinoco crocodile have expanded across Colombia and Venezuela. In Colombia, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with academic and social organizations, has strengthened the National Program for the Conservation of the Orinoco Crocodile (PROCAIMÁN). This initiative focuses on increasing specimen releases, such as a recent release of 17 crocodiles at the Wisirare Biopark, and aims to establish self-sustaining wild populations through habitat monitoring and community education.
In Venezuela, authorities in Lara State have inaugurated the National Center for the Reproduction and Captive Breeding of the Orinoco Crocodile at Bararida Park. The center plans to care for 50 specimens for approximately one year before coordinating their release into natural habitats in conjunction with the Ministry of People's Power for Ecosocialism.
