Osun State NURTW suspension dispute

On 23 July 2026, Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke ordered an immediate suspension of all National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) activities in the state’s motor parks, directing police to stop levy collection and arrest impostors. The move was presented as a security measure, but NURTW President Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo) called it unconstitutional and announced a caretaker committee led by Kazeem Oyewale to manage union affairs ahead of the upcoming governorship election. The state government later clarified that the order only halted union activities and did not dissolve the existing leadership, rejecting the caretaker committee’s legitimacy.

Three days later, on 26 July 2026, Kazeem Oyewale, now inaugurated as chairman of the NURTW Osun State Council in Abuja, declared that peace had returned to the motor parks. He urged residents not to stereotype drivers and called on police to complete investigations into recent killings linked to the leadership crisis. Oyewale appealed for cooperation between the union and the Osun government, emphasizing the union’s independence while confirming that transport operations had normalised.
