Pakistan-Afghanistan border conflict

Overview

Violent clashes have erupted along the Durand Line between Pakistani and Afghan security forces, resulting in fatalities on both sides. Initial reports indicated that Pakistani military retaliatory strikes against suspected Afghan positions led to the deaths of several Afghan soldiers, while heavy exchanges of fire near Paktia province reportedly killed approximately seven Pakistani soldiers. These incidents have disrupted cross-border trade and forced local evacuations.

Subsequent violence occurred in the Angoor Adda sector of South Waziristan. Pakistani officials reported that Afghan Taliban forces launched mortar fire into residential areas and a bazaar, killing one civilian and injuring five family members. In response, Pakistani security forces used artillery and heavy weapons to target Afghan Taliban checkposts and defensive positions, reportedly destroying seven checkposts.

Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the initiation of the recent violence. The Afghan Ministry of Defence claimed the clashes were a response to four Pakistani drone strikes on security installations in Paktika province, asserting that their counter-operations caused significant damage to Pakistani military infrastructure. Conversely, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting dismissed these claims as fabrications, alleging that Afghan forces initiated unprovoked fire under the influence of external actors.

The escalations are rooted in long-standing disputes. Pakistan has accused the Taliban government of allowing groups like Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to operate from Afghan territory, while Afghan authorities have denied these allegations and accused Pakistan of unauthorized border post construction.
