Pakistan energy crisis and LNG procurement

Overview

Pakistan is facing a deepening energy crisis characterized by insufficient gas supplies for power generation, leading to prolonged electricity outages and load-shedding. In response, Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) issued an emergency tender to procure a spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo of approximately 140,000 cubic metres for delivery in early September 2026.

Following the initial procurement efforts, Pakistan Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (PLNGL) issued a third tender for a spot cargo after two previous attempts were reportedly cancelled or rejected due to high pricing. Recent procurement activities included a purchase at $21.88 per MMBtu, noted as the highest spot price to date, while a previous bid of $26.969 per MMBtu was rejected.
