Palestinian academic and cultural presence in Europe
Overview
Palestinian researchers and students have begun arriving in Europe, particularly Italy, through academic and humanitarian initiatives. Under the European Safe project, which is funded by the European Union and coordinated by the German Academic Exchange Service, students such as Mohammed Hajjaj have been evacuated from the Gaza Strip to pursue studies in Italy.
In San Marino, political counselor Matteo Zeppa addressed the arrival of Palestinian students, clarifying that only two individuals have arrived via the university and disputing claims that larger groups were expected.
Efforts to support Palestinian academics have expanded into cultural and community-based initiatives. At the University for Foreigners of Siena, the theatrical project ‘Palestinesi sono i tuoi occhi’ was staged to provide a platform for Palestinian voices through artistic resistance. Additionally, community organizations in Italy are working to support individual students, such as Muhannad, who was admitted to the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio to study Economics with Data Science following extreme hardships in Gaza.
