Palestinian efforts toward national dialogue and elections

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee has called for a comprehensive Palestinian national dialogue to be held in Cairo under Egyptian sponsorship. This initiative follows an announcement by President Mahmoud Abbas regarding a Palestinian reconciliation conference. The committee expressed support for Abbas’s recent address to the United Nations General Assembly and reaffirmed the right to an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

A primary objective of the proposed dialogue is the organization of simultaneous legislative elections across all Palestinian territories, including the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. The PLO has called for international oversight to ensure transparency and to mitigate Israeli obstacles to the electoral process.

Following this call, the Fatah Central Committee, chaired by Hussein al-Sheikh, unanimously decided to initiate the national dialogue immediately. The committee has entered a state of permanent session to monitor political and organizational developments. A delegation has been formed to begin the dialogue process, which aims to protect Palestinian unity and facilitate the convening of the Palestinian National Council and general elections.
