Overview

In late July, Panama’s education system was broadening the use of digital technologies across all levels, from video‑conferencing and virtual classrooms to AI‑driven instructional tools. By early August, the government announced a concrete step to narrow that gap: a $26.6 million purchase of 54,000 AI‑enabled laptops for public‑sector teachers, featuring offline AI capabilities from Intel and Microsoft. Training programs were already underway, with 1,839 teachers equipped and half completing AI training. The rollout complemented similar hardware initiatives in Peru, underscoring a regional push to provide durable, connected devices and teacher training to reduce educational inequalities.
