Pantanal conservation and legal protection efforts
Overview
Efforts to protect and preserve the Pantanal region in Brazil have expanded through both social and legal frameworks. Initial initiatives focused on the intersection of culture and conservation, specifically through the Encontro Mulheres Interbiomas 2026. This event brought together women from Brazil’s five biomes to discuss nature conservation and income generation, aiming to support socio-biodiversity productive chains and Brazil’s 2030 environmental goals.
Following these community-focused efforts, the Public Prosecutor's Office of Mato Grosso do Sul (MPMS) established a specialized Environmental Unit for the Pantanal. Led by Prosecutor Ana Rachel Borges de Figueiredo Nina, this unit covers more than 70% of the state’s Pantanal region across nine municipalities. The unit is designed to handle complex environmental processes, focusing on prevention, inspection, and accountability for environmental damage in coordination with the Environmental Operational Support Center (Caoma).
