Pantanal fire, deforestation, and regulatory shifts

Overview

The digital platform IndiMap was launched to centralize public alerts regarding deforestation and fires in Brazil’s Indigenous territories, integrating data from services such as BDQueimadas/INPE and MapBiomas Alerta. The tool has received positive feedback for its relevance and ease of use. This follows a history of significant ecological damage in the Pantanal, including the loss of over 10% of native vegetation between 2001 and 2025 and a massive 2020 fire that burned approximately 45,000 km².

In July 2026, a wildfire ignited in the Forte Coimbra area near Corumbá and spread across the Brazil-Bolivia border into Bolivia’s Otuquis Integrated Management Area and Otuquis National Park. While joint firefighting efforts from Brazil’s Corpo de Bombeiros Militar and Bolivia’s navy contained the flames on the Brazilian side, the fire continued to burn within the Bolivian conservation area.

Recent regulatory developments have emerged regarding environmental protections. The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) has challenged Legislative Decree Project (PDL) 171/2026, asserting that attempts to annul the expansion of the Taiamã Ecological Station are unconstitutional and pose a risk of “environmental regression.” Additionally, in response to environmental emergencies in Mato Grosso, the State Secretariat of Environment (Sema) and the Fire Department have authorized rural landowners to create preventive firebreaks up to 40 meters wide in Restricted Use Areas without prior environmental authorization, provided they register a declaration and map with the Fire Department.
