Paradip Port operational capacity and growth

Overview

The Paradip Port Authority (PPA) has demonstrated significant operational milestones and growth objectives. On October 10, 2026, the port’s Mechanised Coal Handling Plant achieved a record single-day coal loading of 140,022 metric tonnes, surpassing the previous benchmark of 137,500 MT set in 2022. This achievement, involving the vessels M V APJ Indrani and M V Ripley Pinnacle, was attributed by PPA Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit to the “dedication and teamwork of the port’s workforce.”

Building on this momentum, the PPA has established a target to handle over 170 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo during the 2026–27 fiscal year, representing an approximately 8.7% increase over the 156.45 MMT handled in the 2025–26 fiscal year. To reach these goals, the authority is focusing on infrastructure improvements, including road upgrades, enhanced cargo-stacking areas, dredging, and the promotion of mechanization and green energy initiatives. During discussions with the Paradip Port Stevedores Association, officials emphasized the need to address operational bottlenecks and manage traffic to ensure competitiveness.

Recent data for the 2026–27 fiscal year shows substantial growth in specific commodities. Low-Ash Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) coal handling rose by 20.89% year-on-year to 1,753.04 MT. Additionally, pig iron handling experienced a surge of 512.95%, reaching 660.82 MT, highlighting the port’s expanding role in supporting India’s steel and industrial supply chains.
