Paraguay National Police reform and expansion

Overview

The Paraguayan National Police has undergone significant internal restructuring and reform efforts. Since 2023, more than 200 agents have been dismissed following integrity evaluations, including polygraph examinations used for promotion eligibility. Additionally, 109 officers received dishonorable discharges over a three-year period due to criminal involvement in areas such as organized crime, homicide, and property crimes.

In response to public demands for a more professional and ethical force, President Santiago Peña has pledged increased government support. This includes providing improved equipment, vehicles, and vests, with a goal to expand the total number of officers to over 40,000 by the end of the year.
