Overview

A five‑year‑old boy with autism, João Gabriel Ferreira dos Santos, disappeared from a rural property near Araucária, Paraná on 26 July 2026 after telling his mother he was going to an external bathroom. A massive search operation involving fire‑fighters, police, volunteers, drones, thermal cameras, sonar equipment, dogs, helicopters and two aircraft was launched.

On 28 July his body was recovered in a biodigestor (waste‑water tank) about 70–100 metres from the house. Authorities consider drowning the most likely cause and have opened a forensic investigation, noting no immediate signs of criminal activity. The case was entered into Brazil’s Amber Alert system and the remains were sent to the Institute of Medical‑Legal (IML) for autopsy. Police continue to gather testimonies from family and neighbours to clarify the circumstances.
