Path of Exile 2 version 1.0 launch

Overview

Grinding Gear Games has announced that Path of Exile 2 will officially launch its version 1.0 on December 11, 2026, following a nearly two-year Early Access period. Upon full release, the action RPG will transition to a free-to-play model on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The update will complete the main story campaign by adding the final two Acts and introducing the Duelist class and swords as a new weapon type.

In anticipation of the December release, a mini-season titled ‘Forbidden Rites’ will launch via patch 0.5.5 on September 4. This update features a core mechanics overhaul, an economy reset, and the introduction of Ritual sites in every campaign zone. Players will encounter enemies around effigies to earn Tribute. The update also includes the return of the Wildwood mechanic in the endgame via Viridian Wildwood zones, an extended Trial of Chaos, and the integration of Runes of Aldur.

Specific features of the ‘Forbidden Rites’ event include the ability to find Sacred Blooms that add the Viridian Wildwood area to maps, offering increased monster strength and higher quality rewards. Other modifications include a significant overhaul of the Trial of Chaos to allow players to exit safely between rooms, changes to the boss fight with Uxmal, faster Atlas progression, new Abyssal Ravines, and a new type of Tablets.

Grinding Gear Games has clarified that patch 0.5.5 will not include the Duelist class or sword-based gameplay, as those features are reserved for the 1.0 launch. Additionally, the patch will not include a character balance pass. Due to the increased difficulty of the ‘Forbidden Rites’ event, developers suggest utilizing strong existing builds, such as the Gemling Legionnaire or the Huntress using the Spirit Walker Ascendancy.
