Paul Scholes transfer recommendations for Manchester United

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has publicly recommended several defensive signings to address the club’s backline vulnerabilities.

In mid-August, Scholes suggested that United attempt to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero. While describing the Argentine international as a “nutcase” and an “absolute clown” due to his disciplinary record, Scholes argued that manager Michael Carrick could stabilize the player and that his experience would bolster the defense.

By the end of August, following a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town, Scholes shifted his focus to Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall. He noted that despite the high scoreline, the team appeared vulnerable, specifically citing concerns regarding Luke Shaw’s performance. Scholes proposed that the 21-year-old left-back would provide necessary competition, though Newcastle reportedly considers Hall an ‘untouchable’ asset unless a bid exceeding £75 million is made.

As the summer transfer window concluded, Manchester United failed to sign a new left-back, leaving the club to rely on existing squad depth. Reports indicate the club may be playing a ‘long game’ regarding Lewis Hall, with potential plans to secure him in 2027.

Additionally, Scholes has suggested Chelsea’s Cole Palmer as a long-term target. Noting that Palmer is a childhood United fan, Scholes proposed he could eventually move to Old Trafford to serve as a successor to Bruno Fernandes.
