PDC World Grand Prix tournament

Overview

The PDC World Grand Prix took place at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester from September 28 to October 4, featuring a 32-player field and a unique ‘double-in, double-out’ format.

The tournament saw significant early upsets during the opening rounds. Defending champion and world number one Luke Littler was eliminated after losing 2-1 to Luke Woodhouse.

Six-time champion Michael van Gerwen also exited in the first round, falling 2-1 to Ryan Joyce. This loss marks the third consecutive year the 37-year-old Dutchman has failed to progress past the first round of this tournament. Van Gerwen expressed frustration regarding his performance, specifically citing issues with hitting doubles, and noted he has failed to reach a quarter-final in any of the first five major tournaments this season. Following the defeat, van Gerwen stated he intends to focus on intensive practice to regain his form and confidence.

Other notable early results included Gerwyn Price defeating Sebastian Bialecki 2-0 and Wessel Nijman eliminating former champion Rob Cross in straight sets. As the tournament progressed toward the quarter-finals, scheduled matchups included Nathan Aspinall versus Ryan Joyce and Gerwyn Price versus Jonny Clayton.
