Peanut harvest festivals in Turkey

Overview

Regional peanut production is being celebrated through annual festivals in different Turkish provinces. In Edirne, the second annual Meriç Alibeyköy Peanut Harvest Festival highlighted the use of ancestral seeds that have been cultivated for approximately 100 years. Local officials noted that these unique seeds produce a high-protein product with a distinct flavor, commanding higher market prices. Efforts to support the industry include a new sorting and drying facility and plans for a packaging plant.

In Osmaniye, the third annual Peanut Festival, held under the theme ‘The Root of Flavor is in This Soil,’ has concluded. The event featured a parade from Akyar Street to the Atatürk Street event area, attended by local officials including Governor Mehmet Fatih Serdengeçti and Mayor İbrahim Çenet. The festival aimed to promote the region’s geographically indicated peanut production both domestically and internationally.

Culinary demonstrations were hosted by chefs from various countries, including Russia, Canada, Palestine, Tunisia, and Azerbaijan, to showcase Mediterranean gastronomy. A dessert competition titled ‘My Mother’s Peanut-Like Desserts’ was held, with Canan Türker taking first place. The festivities concluded with a concert by artist Semicenk at the Osmaniye Korkut Ata University Stadium, which drew thousands of attendees.
