Pediatric choking fatality and organ donation in Jesi, Italy

Overview

In Jesi, Italy, a three-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition at the G. Salesi Pediatric Hospital in Ancona after choking on a grape during the San Settimio Fair on September 23. The incident resulted in cardiac arrest, requiring immediate resuscitation efforts from bystanders and the Red Cross before she was transferred via helicopter to the hospital. The child was placed under deep sedation and mechanical ventilation.

Following a six-day hospitalization, the child died on the evening of September 29. After the medical board confirmed the death, her parents decided to donate her organs, stating their intention to turn their grief into ‘a hope of life for other children.’

Medical teams successfully performed the transplant procedure, recovering her kidneys, liver, lungs, and heart. These organs were transferred to a hospital in northern Italy to save other children.
