Pemex water infrastructure failures in Hidalgo
Overview
A series of infrastructure failures involving Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) water lines has caused significant disruption in the state of Hidalgo.
In late August, a major pipeline leak in Tezontepec de Aldama resulted in a water jet reaching heights of over ten meters. This incident forced the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to suspend power to at least nine localities to prevent short circuits. Pemex personnel worked to seal the leak while local authorities managed the emergency.
Less than 15 days later, a second rupture occurred in Tlahuelilpan. This incident caused flooding in a wholesale market area, damaging local businesses, merchandise, and infrastructure, and leaving behind a sinkhole and fractured pavement. Following these consecutive failures, local merchants have demanded comprehensive inspections of regional infrastructure and clarification regarding compensation for damages.
