Pennsylvania university student homicide investigation

Overview

Authorities in Pennsylvania have arrested two individuals in connection with the stabbing death of Karoline Heintz, an 18-year-old incoming soccer player at Pennsylvania Western University. Her body was discovered in the back hatch of her Jeep Cherokee near the California Borough Public Library after her family used an Apple AirTag to trace the vehicle.

Investigators allege that the homicide occurred after Heintz met with her boyfriend, 18-year-old Royce Moser, at his father’s home in North Strabane Township. During a conversation regarding their relationship, Moser allegedly stabbed Heintz in the chest with a large knife. Following the attack, Moser reportedly placed the body in the vehicle and drove to his mother’s home in Beallsville.

Moser’s mother, 57-year-old Rachel Moser, was also arrested for allegedly assisting in an attempt to conceal the crime by cleaning the vehicle with disinfectant, washing clothes, and disposing of bloodstains and the weapon. She faces multiple charges, including hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse. Moser has been charged with criminal homicide and related offenses and is being held without bail. He reportedly claimed “demons” commanded him to commit the act and is expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Following the investigation, authorities released 37 minutes of police bodycam footage showing the discovery of the victim's body inside the Jeep. A preliminary hearing for both Royce Moser and Rachel Moser was held this past Tuesday.
