Persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China

Overview

Reports indicate a sustained campaign by Chinese authorities to target and detain Falun Gong practitioners across multiple provinces, including Hebei, Jilin, Shandong, Tianjin, Liaoning, Gansu, Guangdong, Jiangxi, and Henan.

Initial reports highlighted intensified efforts in Hebei, specifically in Baoding and Langfang, where practitioners faced mass abductions, harassment, and forced signatures on guarantees. Authorities reportedly used surveillance and deceptive tactics, such as false social security appointments, to detain individuals. Human rights advocates have criticized these actions, noting that the state’s policy of ‘transformation’—forcing practitioners to renounce their faith—often bypasses constitutional protections.

Subsequent reports confirm ongoing detentions and disappearances. In Jilin, practitioners were reportedly taken to detention centers, while in Hebei, individuals remain missing after being seized by plainclothes officers. In Shandong, reports emerged of a practitioner suffering severe physical and mental deterioration following a house search and detention, alongside a four-year prison sentence for another individual in Qingdao. In Liaoning, police have been accused of harassing practitioners and their families via telephone.

Recent reports from November 2026 detail further escalations. In Guangdong, Liang Jianjun was reportedly sentenced to three years in prison and transferred to Sihui Prison, where his family has been denied visitation rights, while his wife, Cao Liping, also faces judicial persecution. In Liaoning, 60-year-old Huang Jinlin was reportedly abducted and subjected to physical abuse, including the use of electric batons, leading to physical injury and incontinence, prior to his formal arrest in October 2026. In Hebei, authorities are reportedly collecting DNA information from practitioners, and police have been accused of harassing elderly individuals and demanding money from families. Additional house searches and harassment have been reported in Jiangxi and Henan provinces.
