Peruvian government support for Amazonian regions
Overview
The Peruvian government has initiated various support measures for indigenous and vulnerable communities in the Amazon and border regions. The Ministry of Environment allocated over S/ 415,000 to enhance forest surveillance and monitoring across five regions, including Madre de Dios, Amazonas, Pasco, Junín, and Loreto. This funding provided equipment such as drones, motorcycles, GPS devices, and communication tools to 30 native communities and three indigenous organizations to bolster territorial monitoring.
In addition to environmental surveillance, the government has deployed humanitarian aid and security presence to border areas. Defense Minister Rafael Belaunde delivered eight tons of supplies to Puerto Galilea on the Ecuador border, while 10 tons of aid were sent to the Cutivireni Asháninka community in Junín to provide health services and technical assistance.
Amid these efforts, the Central Asháninka del Río Ene (CARE) has raised concerns regarding institutional negligence in the Pangoa district. The organization is demanding investigations into the deaths of three children, alleging that a lack of timely emergency medical evacuations by the Tambo Potsoteni program contributed to the fatalities.
