Peter Obi's term pledge and power plan

In late July 2026, presidential candidate Peter Obi of Nigeria’s Democratic Congress announced he would serve only a single four‑year term if elected in 2027. He also said a nationwide 24‑hour electricity supply was unrealistic within that period, proposing instead to boost generation, transmission and distribution to reliably deliver at least 10,000 MW, citing a pilot model in Aba. The presidency’s senior special assistant criticised the one‑term pledge as potentially short‑changing the South‑East’s quest for an Igbo president and called for broader regional consultation.

A week later, Obi reiterated on Channels TV that the country’s chronic power shortages, which have persisted since the mid‑1970s, cannot be fully resolved within a single term. He emphasized that lasting reform would require more than one administration, urging voters to temper expectations of rapid transformation and warning that past promises of swift development have often fallen short.
