Petrobras technical and carbon management projects

Petrobras has initiated several technical projects in Brazil focused on carbon management and offshore infrastructure technology.

In August 2026, the company contracted Halliburton Produtos Ltda for the São Tomé CCS Pilot Project in Rio de Janeiro. This initiative involves drilling four onshore wells to capture, transport, and store industrial CO2 in a saline reservoir, with the goal of capturing up to 100,000 tons of CO2 annually. The project is part of a broader strategy to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

By September 2026, Petrobras expanded its technical trials by awarding a contract to Strohm B.V. for deepwater thermoplastic composite pipe (TCP) applications. This project involves testing lightweight, non-corrosive pipes for water injection and gas lift at depths of up to 1,500 meters in offshore post-salt clusters. The agreement with Strohm B.V. and its subsidiary, Strohm Brasil, includes supply, qualification testing, project engineering, and field services. These pipes, manufactured from carbon or glass fiber reinforced with polyethylene or polyamide, are designed to be lighter and easier to handle than traditional rigid or flexible solutions.

Following a joint industry program with Petrobras and Shell, Strohm completed full-scale qualification and offshore field trials for its TCP flowline technology. The technology aims to address integrity challenges in Brazil’s pre-salt and post-salt provinces, where high CO2 concentrations often cause stress corrosion cracking in conventional flexible pipes. As a non-metallic solution, the TCP offers a 30-year design life and eliminates corrosion risks. The successful trials demonstrated compatibility with existing offshore installation fleets, positioning the technology for broader use in ultra-deepwater environments.
