Phishing scams targeting European utility companies
Overview
Utility and telecommunications companies in Northern Europe have issued warnings regarding phishing scams targeting customers through fraudulent billing communications.
In Lithuania, Telia reported phishing scams involving counterfeit electronic invoices. These emails use the company’s logo and realistic information to pressure customers into paying alleged debts to incorrect bank accounts. The company noted that attackers often use sender domains that differ from the official address by only a single character.
In Denmark, the energy company EWII reported a widespread SMS phishing scam. Scammers send text messages claiming there are unpaid invoices and threatening to disconnect power if immediate payment is not made. These messages direct recipients to fake websites that mimic the company’s official branding.
