Photovoltaic self-consumption growth in Canary Islands

Overview

The Canary Islands have seen significant growth in photovoltaic self-consumption capacity. In Gran Canaria, the Insular Energy Council (CIEGC) distributed over 628,000 euros in subsidies to 316 homes under a 2025 grant program, facilitating the installation of 2,418 solar panels and adding approximately 1.56 megawatts of power.

On a broader regional scale, the Canary Islands have reached a total of 302 megawatts of installed nominal power for photovoltaic self-consumption. Since the beginning of the 2023 legislature, installations have grown to over 24,800. Between 2020 and 2026, the number of self-consumption installations multiplied 17-fold, with a particularly rapid increase in power capacity of 122.3% recorded between late 2023 and June 2026. Tenerife and Gran Canaria represent more than 70% of the region's total power and installation count, with the residential sector driving over 90% of these points.
