Physiotherapist investigation in Goiânia

Overview

Authorities in Goiânia, Brazil, have arrested and detained physiotherapist Magda Oliveira da Silva following investigations into severe patient injuries caused by unauthorized aesthetic procedures.

Initial reports indicated that at least seven patients suffered from necrosis, infections, and mutilation resulting from Silva exceeding professional limits by performing surgical interventions with scalpels and prescribing medications. Investigators noted significant hygiene failures, such as the absence of sterile gloves and masks, and seized expired medications and supplies lacking sanitary permits during searches of her residence and clinics.

As the investigation progressed, the number of reported victims rose to at least nine women. Reported complications include cuts, burns, bleeding, tissue loss, scarring, and loss of sensitivity across facial, mammary, gluteal, and intimate regions. In response to the allegations, the Regional Council of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy of the 19th Region has launched an administrative and ethical-disciplinary proceeding. Police have released the suspect’s image to assist in identifying further potential victims.
