Pink October cancer awareness in Brazil

Overview

Health authorities and public institutions in the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul are intensifying ‘Pink October’ campaigns to promote breast and cervical cancer awareness and early diagnosis.

In Mato Grosso, the Public Prosecutor's Office organized forums with specialists to discuss prevention, patient rights, and the debunking of misinformation. The State Health Secretariat reported that 18,567 mammographies were performed in the state between January and July, while the Santa Casa State Hospital conducted thousands of consultations and nearly 2,000 bilateral mammographies between January and September. Health Secretary Juliano Melo noted that early detection can lead to cure rates exceeding 90%.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, the Legislative Assembly is promoting awareness to address high incidence rates, noting that the state recorded 910 cases in 2025. Efforts are focused on increasing mammography coverage to meet World Health Organization targets.
