Plovdiv central station tunnel construction
Overview
The construction of a transport tunnel under the Central Railway Station in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, has faced both technical challenges and progress reports.
Initial reports highlighted significant structural defects in the newly constructed tunnel, including the complete collapse of a metal segment of a linear drainage shaft into an active traffic lane. Additionally, sections of the connecting road remained unfinished without final asphalt layers. The contractor, Trace Group Holding, committed to urgent repairs and inspections following these failures.
Subsequent updates indicate the project is advancing toward a planned completion by the end of the year. The tunnel, which includes a 580-meter underground section, features two lanes in each direction and integrated bus stops. While drainage and ventilation systems are installed, asphalt paving is scheduled for November. To address local noise complaints, contractors have also begun replacing noisy manhole shafts on Vasil Aprilov Boulevard.
