Poland emergency communication system updates
Overview
The Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration (MSWiA) has initiated measures to strengthen national crisis preparedness through diverse communication channels.
Initially, authorities emphasized the importance of traditional longwave radio, specifically recommending the 225 kHz frequency used by Polskie Radio Program 1. This recommendation aims to ensure citizens can receive vital information during power outages, internet failures, or cellular network disruptions caused by natural disasters or military threats.
Following these preparedness guidelines, the government announced plans to invest approximately 100 million PLN into Cell Broadcast technology. Scheduled for full deployment in the second half of 2027, this system will replace or augment the current SMS-based RCB Alert system by sending warnings directly to mobile devices via base stations within specific danger zones. While the technology offers faster alerts without requiring data access, some experts have raised concerns regarding “alert fatigue,” noting that frequent notifications could lead citizens to ignore warnings during actual emergencies.
