Overview

Poland is experiencing record compensation payouts to renewable energy producers due to increasing energy surpluses. To maintain national power system stability when supply from wind and solar exceeds demand, the grid operator, Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), utilizes non-market redispatching to reduce production or temporarily shut down sources.

In the first seven months of 2026, total compensations exceeded 100 million PLN. Specifically, PSE paid 57.9 million PLN in the first quarter of 2026 to cover redispatching costs incurred between 2023 and 2025. Photovoltaics represent approximately 70 percent of the energy production that operators are unable to accept into the grid.

These compensation costs are funded through quality fees paid by consumers. While PSE notes these payments represent a minimal portion of total costs—approximately 0.13 percent of the average rate in early 2026—the costs are passed on to consumers as part of system operating expenses. Additionally, distribution tariffs for 2026 are expected to increase by an average of 9.36 percent compared to 2025.
