Police officer shooting in San Juan

Overview

On September 14, 2026, Mariana Sol Jofré, a 29-year-old police officer who was six months pregnant, was shot in the back while performing administrative duties at the La Bebida police station in Rivadavia, San Juan.

The shooting occurred when her colleague, Cristian Exequiel Albarracín, was handling his service weapon. Albarracín informed investigators that he had previously loaned the firearm to another officer, identified as Castro, for a pursuit and was unaware the weapon had been returned to him loaded.

Jofré underwent surgery to remove the bullet and was discharged from the hospital with both her and her unborn child reported to be in good health. While Albarracín has been formally charged and remains free during an eight-month investigation, Jofré’s family has criticized local authorities for a lack of communication, stating they learned of her condition through media reports rather than official channels.
