Police rescue in Natal, Brazil

Overview

On August 23, security forces in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, conducted a rescue operation on the Rio Potengi to save a woman from a suspected execution. The operation was triggered by reports that the woman was being held against her will on a vessel and was being transported to a ‘tribunal do crime’ (crime tribunal) to be killed due to allegations that she acted as an informant.

The Integrated Air Operations Coordination (Ciopaer) deployed the Potiguar 01 helicopter, which located the boat near the Passo da Pátria community. Upon being monitored by the aircraft, the suspects changed course and returned to their point of origin, where they were intercepted by the 1st Military Police Battalion and the Shock Battalion.

Several suspects were arrested, some of whom had prior criminal records for drug trafficking and robbery. Following her liberation, the woman has been placed under the protection and assistance of the state network to address her vulnerability. The Civil Police continue to investigate the specific responsibilities of those detained and the motivations behind the incident.
