Polish consumer retail and food waste trends

Overview

In Poland, consumer focus remains on retail pricing strategies and the economic impact of food waste. Recent data from Opinia24 for Too Good To Go confirms that food waste costs Polish households approximately 1,741 PLN per person annually, totaling a national loss of roughly 65 billion PLN. Meat is the most expensive category lost to waste, costing individuals about 258 PLN per year.

New data from the Polish Food Banks Federation indicates that 63% of Poles admit to throwing away food. The most frequently wasted items include bread (53%), fruit (47%), vegetables (45%), cold cuts (39%), and yogurt (25%), often due to missed expiration dates or improper storage. In response, Kaufland has launched the “Marnowanie? Nie mam w planie!” campaign, which promotes using aesthetically imperfect products and utilizes “Green Zones” for items nearing expiration.

Consumer priorities are shifting toward cost-saving. A report by the Polish Promotional Emblem Foundation shows that price has overtaken quality as the primary shopping concern, with 88.5% of consumers prioritizing price compared to 76.1% for quality. Furthermore, the willingness to pay a premium for high-quality products has dropped from 82.9% in 2024 to 59.2%. Despite this, 82.8% of respondents still prefer buying Polish products.

Retailer price variations remain significant. An ASM FSA report noted that the average cost of an essential basket was 320.10 PLN in September, a 0.21% increase from August but a 0.91% decrease year-over-year. While Intermarche saw a 4.52% price increase, Aldi recorded a 4.82% decrease.
