Polish military armored modernization

Poland is undergoing a significant military modernization of its armored capabilities, transitioning away from older Soviet-era T-72 models through large-scale procurement from the United States and South Korea.

Regarding American hardware, the Polish Armed Forces have reached approximately 299 Abrams tanks. This total includes 183 M1A2 SEPv3 vehicles delivered under a 2022 contract, with full delivery expected by the end of 2025, alongside 116 M1A1 FEP tanks. Recent arrivals include 36 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks and seven technical support vehicles in late June. This influx has introduced logistical considerations regarding fuel consumption; for example, the M1A1 FEP can consume up to 1,090 liters of fuel per 100 km in off-road conditions, compared to approximately 828 liters for the Leopard 2A5 and 480 liters for the PT-91.

Simultaneously, Poland has begun receiving South Korean K2 Black Panther tanks to bolster its mechanized divisions. The first 28 units have arrived as part of a second executive contract signed on August 1, 2025, which aims to provide 180 tanks and various supporting vehicles. These initial units are designated to bolster the 16th Mechanized Division, particularly in northeastern regions near the Russian border.

The broader procurement strategy includes the delivery of 116 K2GF tanks through 2027 and 64 K2PL tanks—a localized Polish version—between 2028 and 2030. This cooperation aims for deep localization, with plans to manufacture 61 K2PL units at the Bumar-Łabędy plants in Gliwice to integrate Polish components and strengthen domestic industrial production.
