Polish mining labor protests

Overview

Trade unions at the Bełchatów mine, including MZZ ‘Odkrywka’ and WZZ ‘Sierpień 80’, announced a protest for October 5 in Katowice. The demonstration targets PGE GiEK’s restructuring and cost-cutting plans, which workers claim involve staff reductions and insufficient maintenance. Unions are demanding the launch of the Złoczew open-pit mine to ensure energy security during the transition to nuclear power.

By late October, labor unrest expanded to include miners at the Bogdanka coal mine. Protesters there are demanding declarations from the Ministry of State Assets regarding the mine’s future amidst the energy transition. Management has scheduled a meeting with union representatives for November 3 to address these concerns.
