Polish police sobriety enforcement operations

Overview

Polish authorities have implemented various sobriety enforcement operations to ensure public safety. Initially, police focused on waterways, where violators using non-mechanical equipment like kayaks face fines between 20 and 500 PLN or equipment towing, while mechanical watercraft operators exceeding 0.5 per mille face up to two years of imprisonment.

In the Opole Voivodeship, a large-scale preventive operation titled ‘Trzeźwy poranek’ (Sober Morning) involved officers performing nearly 17,000 breathalyzer tests on August 17. This operation identified 47 unfit drivers, resulting in the immediate revocation of 41 driving licenses. During this operation, a Georgian national was detained for intoxication, speeding, and attempting to bribe officers with 200 PLN; a passenger in that vehicle was also found to be staying in the country illegally.

Subsequent enforcement has expanded across multiple regions. In Toruń, a ‘Trzeźwe popołudnie’ (Sober Afternoon) operation identified 11 intoxicated operators within a two-hour window. In Lower Silesia, the ‘Alkohol i Narkotyki’ (Alcohol and Drugs) campaign targeted drivers throughout the province, resulting in dozens of detections.

Other regional incidents include a 55-year-old driver in Mielec recorded with 4 per mille of alcohol, and an electric scooter rider in Płock with nearly 3 per mille. Enforcement has also addressed violations involving minors, such as two 14-year-olds operating unregistered mopeds without licenses. These actions are part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety through strict penalties, including imprisonment and vehicle confiscation.
