Polish veteran and resistance commemorations

Overview

Various ceremonies have been held across Poland to honor veterans and members of the underground resistance.

Initial commemorations focused on soldiers of the struggle for independence, including the unveiling of a memorial plaque for Józef Wójcik, a Monte Cassino veteran, in Korzeniów, and the designation of Major Józef Oleksiewicz’s grave in Księginice Wielkie.

Subsequent events expanded to honor those who fought against the communist regime following World War II. In Włodawa, ceremonies marked the 80th anniversary of a 1946 raid on a Public Security Office by Freedom and Independence (WiN) units. In Wrocław, a funeral service was held for four individuals associated with the Home Army and the Freedom and Independence association who were victims of communist repression in 1948. The service was attended by President Karol Nawrocki, who highlighted the necessity of remembering sacrifices made for Polish sovereignty.
