Political disputes in Kerala
Overview
Political tensions in Kerala have involved disputes between the BJP and the Congress party, as well as internal disciplinary actions within the Congress party following controversies involving the judiciary.
In late September, BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi, alleging that Gandhi had called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘deshdrohi’ and made disparaging remarks about the Election Commission. Chandrasekhar also challenged the Congress party’s stance on democracy and secularism in response to criticisms from Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan.
By late October, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) issued an unconditional apology to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. This followed a controversial social media post demanding the Chief Justice’s resignation. KPCC President Sunny Joseph stated the remarks were unauthorized and did not reflect official party policy. Consequently, Vijay Thottathil, who published the post, was removed from his position and directed to issue a public apology.
