Political mobilization and dissent in Angola and Mozambique

Overview

Political activity in Angola and Mozambique has seen both mobilization and legal friction. In Angola, the Organização da Mulher Angolana (OMA) launched the ‘OMA em Movimento’ caravan, traveling from Luanda to Namibe to promote unity and support for President João Lourenço ahead of the MPLA’s 9th Ordinary Congress.

However, legal actions have targeted dissent in Angola. Gerson Emanuel Quintas, known as ‘Man Genas’, received a two-year suspended prison term and a two-year social media ban after being found guilty of insulting the State following accusations of drug trafficking involving security forces. His wife also received a two-year social media ban.

In Mozambique, the ANAMOLA party alleged discriminatory treatment by the Mozambique Republic Police in Nampula. Supporters claimed police prevented ANAMOLA members from marching as a group during city anniversary celebrations, while other political groups were permitted to march together. Concurrently, ANAMOLA president Venâncio Mondlane has called for peaceful demonstrations at embassies to protest authoritarianism, corruption, and human rights violations across Africa, specifically highlighting the situation in Zimbabwe.
