Political unrest and legal disputes in Kolkata
Overview
Political tensions in Kolkata have manifested through various incidents involving different political figures and legal disputes.
In early October, veteran lawyer and former CPM Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya reported a planned attack on his East Jadavpur residence. Attackers on motorcycles allegedly threw bricks and glass bottles, damaging property and CCTV cameras. Bhattacharya suggested ‘Hindutva goons’ were responsible and expressed a need for a firearm license for security.
Separately, Kolkata Police summoned Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee regarding a clash at his Camac Street office in late August. The dispute arose when officials attempted to remove an illegal billboard, resulting in a scuffle where activists were accused of assaulting personnel. While 14 individuals have been arrested, Banerjee and other party leaders remain under police scrutiny regarding the incident.
