Political violence and security concerns in Ebonyi State

Political tensions and concerns regarding security in Ebonyi State have escalated amid preparations for the 2027 general elections.

In mid-August 2026, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accused the Ebonyi State Police Command of failing to intervene during an attack on a political rally in Ezza South LGA. Former PDP Chairman Ifeanyi Nworie reported that over 50 individuals attacked the venue, injuring ten party members and several journalists. While the police stated they received no prior petitions for security, the PDP also faced and denied allegations concerning the illegal procurement of Permanent Voter Cards.

Following these events, police launched an investigation into the death of Elder Onwe Ubochi, a 70-year-old man found dead in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area. Ubochi had reportedly gone missing after participating in a public endorsement of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidates. APGA candidate Tochukwu Ogalagu described the killing as “gruesome and dastardly,” suggesting a potential link to political threats related to the upcoming elections.
