Political violence in West Bengal

Overview

Political violence involving members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged in West Bengal.

In one instance, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a chargesheet against 11 individuals regarding the May 6 murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The investigation identified two BJP workers, brothers Sagar and Sahib Sonkar, as conspirators who financed and organized the killing by hiring sharpshooters from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

In a separate incident in Baruipur, West Bengal Police arrested four individuals, including a former local BJP leader, for the murder of BJP worker Bapi Pramanik. While the victim’s family alleges a planned attack rooted in political rivalries, investigators are also looking into motives involving old enmities or disputes over a local puja committee.
