Pope John Paul II memorial development in Cuiabá

Overview

Officials in Cuiabá, including the city government, the São João Paulo II Eucharistic Sanctuary, and the Fiemt System, have partnered to develop the Pope John Paul II Memorial into a religious tourism hub. The project aims to preserve the history of the Pontiff’s 1991 visit to the region and establish the city as a destination for pilgrims.

To mark the 35th anniversary of the Pope’s visit, Cuiabá has inaugurated a life-sized sculpture of Saint John Paul II at the Cruz do Papa. Created by Portuguese artist Francisco Charneca, the sculpture was unveiled during a religious and cultural ceremony featuring a Holy Mass and a musical performance by Catholic singer Celina Borges.

Mayor Abilio Brunini stated that the initiative seeks to preserve the historical memory of the pontiff’s visit and develop the site as a significant destination for religious tourism. Father Marcos Ferrucci, rector of the Saint John Paul II Eucharistic Sanctuary, highlighted the emotional importance of the milestone for the local Catholic community. To support the festivities and the site, the Cuiabá City Hall provided cleaning, maintenance, and lighting improvements to the Cruz do Papa region.
